Every Wednesday, Clayton and I do something called “Weekly Wellness.” It’s our way of slowing down, living intentionally, and prioritizing wellness. Especially since we spend the majority of the week WFH. We choose one day out of the week (Wednesdays in our case!) and block off a couple hours to spend time outside and do things that we like. That usually looks like surfing for Clayton and reading on the beach for me. Weekly Wellness is basically our version of self-care and showing up for ourselves. And prioritizing our wellness helps us maintain healthy relationships with ourselves and each other.
Slowing down is important because when you stop rushing and notice your surroundings, you start to enjoy life and the little things a lot more! We’ve noticed that we’ve become more focused, less stressed, and more mindful when it comes to people and things going on in our lives. Rushing through your day basically makes you use stress to motivate yourself to be faster. And constantly being in a rushed state of mind usually causes you to focus only on yourself. To slow down, we start by taking a minute to notice our surroundings. Then we try to stay present, aware, and mindful of the people or experiences in front of us. The most important part of slowing down is taking a few minutes to yourself before jumping from task to task. This keeps us from rushing through things and helps us gather our thoughts and reset our minds throughout the day. Living intentionally also goes hand in hand with slowing down! We’re always making the conscious effort to be more mindful and intentional with our words and actions.
We choose to take our Weekly Wellness activities outside because fresh air has a lot of benefits for your overall health. Like better digestion, the ability to better maintain your blood pressure, weight, and heart rate, a stronger immune system, and improved mood and energy levels. And in general, you get higher levels of oxygen and lower levels of pollution with fresh air than you do with indoor air!
We like to start our Wednesday evenings by shutting off our computers, getting out of the house, and taking time for ourselves. This also keeps us from feeling cooped up after working inside all day and makes sure we get fresh air and some form of exercise. Especially since we’re still in quarantine and social distancing! Here are some things we like to do for Weekly Wellness (and throughout the week!) that help us feel good, slow down, and relax:
- Going to the beach
- Exploring new parks (or going back to our favorites!)
- Rollerblading
- Walking
- Grabbing a snack and watching the sunset
- Having picnics or opting to eat outside
- Exercising
- Journaling
- Eating mindfully
- Manifesting
- Practicing gratitude
- Getting plenty of sleep
- Limiting screen time
- Staying hydrated!
