How To Start That Blog
This article is going to be less about the logistics of starting a blog (as that’s quite boring and tedious) and more about the chops it takes to start a blog.
I will discuss the motivation it takes to actually get going, and my best advice for you at the beginning stages of blogging. Read on to learn all about the struggles, the process, and the rewards of starting your blog!
1. Just Get Going
I cannot stress this one enough.
You’ve probably already heard that a million times, it’s kind of a no-brainer. But it is honestly the most important bit of advice I could ever give you about starting a blog.
The one thing I regret is that I didn’t start sooner.
Seriously.
I spent so much time second guessing myself and getting overwhelmed by the process and the logistics of starting a blog that it took me much longer than it should have. Everybody starts from the ground up so don’t be intimidated.
Write out a list of things you need to do to start a blog and seriously tackle that list head on. Get a domain, find a layout you like, buy a camera or some filters from VSCO, start planning out outfits, meals, workouts…whatever you are going to blog about. Just get going. Please. I’m begging you. You will thank yourself in a month.
The hardest part of anything is the period where you are waiting to jump. So just jump. Jump right into the blog process, and be amazed by all of the wonderful things that will come from this leap of faith!
2. Don’t Let Perfection Get In The Way of Progress
This is a BIG one, almost as important as the first tip.
I still struggle with this all the time. And quite frankly, if my goal is to always be improving, I’m always going to struggle with this. But you cannot let the idea of having a perfect blog stop you from starting a blog.
For example, I think a lot of people are intimidated by the idea of starting a blog because they look up to all these amazing, sophisticated, fine tuned bloggers and their work. It takes so much time and energy to master the art of blogging. Bloggers who have damn near perfected their craft have been doing it for a fair amount of time and I guarantee they have poured themselves into their work. Meaning, they have spent countless days working hard on content, concepts, and execution.
You may not be exactly where you want to be in your writing, your layout, or your concepts when you first start out. That is okay.
Blogging is a never ending learning process. I can barely look back at my earliest blogs without cringing. (Yikes!) But it makes me proud of all the hard work I have put in and how far I have come. You will constantly be learning how to better your blog. Wether that be via writing, photos, concept, or web design.
So don’t hold back from getting started because your site and your work aren’t perfect yet. You’re going to have a long road of trials and tribulations that will turn you into the type of blogger you always wanted to be. Just know you will have to put in your fair share of hard work and time.
And like I said, this is something I am still struggling with. My blog is not where I want it to be. But every week I am working at getting better. I study writing techniques, I read other blogs, and I have goals of changing things up in the future.
So just keep blogging. You get better and better, and it is so worth all the hard work you put in!
3. Allow Your Blog To Be Your Voice
When I first started blogging I didn’t even write anything. Lol. I just posted photos of my outfits.
That’s how scared I was to put my writing and my voice out there.
Slowly but surely I began to feel more comfortable with my audience and my own voice. I thought to myself, I have some thoughts that I’d like to share with the world. I need to start writing on my blog!
And let me tell ya, it was actually pretty nerve racking. It’s hard for us to put ourselves out there like that. But it’s been my best decision yet. By opening up the avenue of text I’ve been able to share so much more dialogue and connection with my readers.
Connecting with readers is the most rewarding part of blogging.
And that’s pretty hard to do when you are hiding behind a rock because you are scared what people will think of your writing. Open up to your readers at whatever pace you feel most comfortable. But take it from me, don’t be shy. People want to support you more than tear you down.
The truth is, nobody ridicules your writing quite like you do. So just throw your inhibitions to the wind and let your voice be heard! We each have such unique and interesting perspectives. It’s important to share yours with the world because nobody else has it. The value this will give you and your readers is immense.
Don’t be shy, let your voice be heard and allow yourself to be touched by the connections you will be able to make because of this!
