Let’s Talk About Modeling
It’s Fridayyyy, YAY!
As usual this week flew by because it was jam packed with meetings, shoots, emails, and the alike.
Today I’m actually headed out to one more really exciting meeting. It’s something very different to my usual realm but I’m super excited about it. I’ll be sharing more about this meeting later on the blog so stay tuned. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I do!
Anyways, today’s post is a part of my ‘Industry Talk’ series and its all about modeling, so let’s get to it!
Network, Network, Network
When you’re trying to break into any industry networking is a sure way. Modeling is no different. You need to build up your contacts, your connections, and your community.
When I first started modeling (about a year ago) I simply started by reaching out to people via Instagram and vice versa. I actually reached out to a few models just for moral support and guidance. Some of those girls have become great friends and they were truly instrumental in helping me on this journey.
Working with tons of photographers has also helped me so much. Not only did their work build me a portfolio, and expose me to more opportunities and more connections, but they also became some of my closest friends.
Build Real Relationships and Form A Community
I want to stress that networking doesn’t mean using people to climb to the top as soon as possible. In fact, if you’re going to treat people like that I don’t think you’re going to get very far with anything. I just want to point that out because I think it’s SO important you’re building genuine relationships and supporting one another, not social climbing. My idea of networking means connecting, co-creating, and building a tribe of people that support and challenge you to grow. Don’t be shy to reach out to people and be open to whoever comes along your path.
Not every modeling job I’ve booked has been a great match. Not every photographer has been the right fit for me. Sometimes personalities clash, details don’t work out, people have off days etc. But for the most part its really helped me to push my comfort zone and be open minded to almost all of the opportunities that have come my way. And be warned, you’re gonna have to hustle. This stuff is not easy, but it’s fun!
Practice Your Craft
Once you start connecting with other models, creatives, and photographers try to work on projects as much as possible.
Shoot every single day if you can.
I was fortunate to move to a place that has a pretty thriving community of creatives. The modeling industry itself is somewhat lacking here in the Bay Area but theres no shortage of photographers, creatives, and models. But I do understand that not everyone has access to a community like this. If you don’t have these people at your fingertips get creative.
If you’re passionate about modeling you can harass your family and friends into helping you shoot. Maybe it won’t be portfolio quality shots but it’s still a way for you to practice mastering your angles and getting comfortable in front of the camera. The more natural and relaxed you can be while still manipulating your gestures and expressions to be flattering – the better. So even if you don’t have a photographer on speed dial you can still be honing your craft.
AND if you’re really dedicated and no one is around to even snap some quick pics of you, just practice your posing in the mirror. You’ll look silly doing it and you will feel even sillier but its a great way to develop memory muscle of your most flattering angles.
Do Your Research and Always Be Expanding
You’ve got to stay on top of your game if you want to get into modeling.
If you’re not on the up and up of current styles, trends, and the general industry it will be a huge disadvantage.
I’ve found that the best way to stay in the know of modeling is to browse fashion magazines, follow some of your favorite models on social media, and pay close attention to details when searching inspo.
For example, notice what a model you look up to is doing with her hands, notice where she places her feet for a certain pose, take note of a fun and silly expression that you’ve seen in a recent campaign. Or if you’re a huge fan of a certain company and you loveee their style or dream of working with them specifically study their campaigns and learn from their models.
There is endless inspiration and reading material on modeling and all you’ve got to do is dive in girlfriend. Also, if you don’t want to purchase fashion magazines hit up your local Barnes and Noble and geek out in the cafe for a few hours while browsing the glossy pages of Vogue. Snap pictures of your favorite poses etc. and start a file in your phone for modeling inspo. Also start a Pinterest board for modeling and update it everyday with new inspirations.
Don’t Be Afraid to Expand!
Once you get more into the groove of modeling don’t be afraid to expand your style, your portfolio, your clients, and your photographers. At first I did all lifestyle modeling and then I transitioned into print and fashion. I have even done a few bridal, lingerie, active wear, and swimwear shoots.
When I first started I would never have guessed I would have the confidence or the skills to do any of those. But the more time I spent in front of the camera the more comfortable I became and I developed the skills necessary to pursue modeling. So don’t be afraid, if you put passion and hard work together you can totally do this and I’m so excited for you!

Thanks for sharing. This is a nice post, I learnt one or two things.
I have a question though, how do you come up with poses? I ind myself running short of them sometimes when shooting.

Hi Alexandra,
Thanks for your question! I get a lot of my pose inspiration from mood boards, magazines, and my saved folder on instagram! Try having those handy when you’re on a shoot and you can refer to them for a pose you want to try! Xo
