Over Labor Day Weekend my boyfriend and I decided to spend a day at the ocean, because obviously it is the most magical, beautiful, peaceful place in the world right? The ocean is truly my happy place. Without fail it always makes me feel small and humble, connected to the world, and amazed by the astonishing power and beauty of mother nature. Well, speaking of that…we had one of the most amazing awe inspiring moments while we were lounging next to the sea. Right in front of us multiple whales started to appear. This was an unexpected joy to say the least. These giant majestic creatures were only about 30 feet away from us at points. I even got nervous that they were going to end up on the beach, but of course they knew their power and navigation very well and they successfully fed, breeched, and played right in front of us for over an hour. As my boyfriend and I were stunned by this experience we noticed that most of the people around us were watching this unreal event play out through the tiny electronic screens of their cell phones. I was saddened to see people dull down the experience through a tiny screen. Don’t get me wrong, technology can be great. Of course I am thankful that I can call my mom from almost anywhere in the world, I love the fact that I can upload pictures of clothes and share my personal style with the world, and I even like updating people with mundane parts of my life through Snapchat. But I think there is a time and a place for everything, and a limit as well. I think the amazing experience of seeing the power and beauty of whales in nature is something that is best shared with those with you at the time, and I wouldn’t want to miss a second of it…not even in order to capture it to save for later. No matter how great the photo or video you ended up getting may turn out, the experience itself is undeniably more vivid and awesome and you may have missed it because you made sure you had to capture it to show someone else later. I felt like I did myself a favor by enjoying that moment for me instead of capturing it to make sure someone else could enjoy it later. I felt that I lived in the now, and I was not concerned with validating my experience with proof, I just enjoyed it for what it was. And in my opinion there is so much beauty and peace in that. I didn’t feel as if I had to show others how great it was, I just experienced how great it was and that filled my heart with a different and more fulfilling kind of satisfaction. So all in all, this experience was something I will never forget and it was a perfect reminder for me to live in the moment and detach slightly from the obsession and infatuation of documentation and technology so that I might be more connected and aware of my experiences. I would encourage others to go out and do the same, wether its through nature, family events, or a talk over coffee…put your cell phone down and be there, everything you need is right in front. I dare you! Enjoy! 🙂

Love the outfit especially the blouse and the hat! You are a seaside beauty!
Thanks XOXO 🙂
You are right – we need to put our devices down and enjoy the moment! I love the pics and I loved reading your description about the whales! I could picture it without seeing any pics!
Thanks so much! XOXO
What an awesome perspective! I love the line “filled my heart with a different and more FULFILLING kind of satisfaction”. We think we’re getting it when we’ve got it recorded but actually, we missed it! You’re a wise one, to have already recognized that before you even hit 30.
Exactly! The real joy is found in letting a moment naturally unfold and naturally slip away with only a fond memory left.Too many things have been tainted by the obsession of video and picture, I may have less pictures to show one day but hopefully I will have a heart full of memories, just like people have done for thousands of years before cell phones:) XOXO
